FL Div 9: Curraha come up short

Curraha 3.10   Carnaross 4.19

Curraha travelled to Pairc Naomh Ciarán, Carnaross on Tuesday evening for round 2 of the PMC Physiotherapy Division 9 league. Curraha were looking to pick up their first points of the campaign after a narrow defeat to Donaghmore/Ashbourne 2 weeks prior. The game got underway at 7pm on a dry but cold late spring evening.

It was the home side who were the quickest out of the blocks and led by 1.04 to 0.00 after 5 minutes of play who were aided by the breeze. Curraha got the scoreboard ticking after 6 minutes of play when they put together a fine move which was finished off by Curraha full forward Gavin Coyle with a fine point off his right. Carnaross were the more clinical side in the first 15 minutes of the first half and fired over 3 further points and a 2 pointer. Curraha began to grow into the game and Gavin Coyle got their second point of the game in the 16th minute. Curraha started to win some fine turnovers in the back line and worked the ball up the field. Ben Heagney played the ball to Conor Joyce who played it to Gavin Coyle who rifled the ball into the back of the net. Matthew Brennan produced a fine save to deny Carnaross a goal of their own to keep the deficit at 7 points. Carnaross fired over 2 further points with 9 minutes remaining in the half to leave 9 between the sides. Curraha had their best period of the game so far and Conor Joyce finished the ball to the back of the net after a well won kickout. Curraha were in for their 3rd goal minutes later when Gavin Coyle was fouled inside the D. Coyle spotted Kevin O’Connor making a fine run and when O’Connor received the ball in his hands he kept the ball low into the corner of the net to now leave only 3 points between the teams. Carnaross got a further point as the game headed for halftime. Mylo Hussey kicked a fine point off his right foot to leave 3 between the teams as the halftime whistle sounded.

HT score: Curraha 3.03    Carnaross 1.12

Curraha have been fortunate that for their opening 2 games they have had good numbers. They made 3 halftime subs with Kevin Doyle coming on for Mylo Hussey, Jamie Fewer for Jared Roche and Eoghan Burke coming on for Andrew Gough. Carnaross started the second half just like they had at the start of the first and got 1. 02 without reply. Curraha started to once again find their feet and never threw in the towel and Gavin Coyle kicked 2 brilliant 2 pointer frees in the 7th and 9th minute to leave 4 between the teams. Curraha made another 2 subs in the 10th minute when Mark Phelan came on for Conor Joyce and Alan O'Connor came on for John Dardis. Carnaross eased the pressure from themselves with 3 further points with 17 minutes remaining. Conor McAleese was introduced for PJ O'Reilly in the 15th minute for Curraha. Kevin Doyle kicked a superb point off his left foot after a brilliant team move to leave 6 between the teams. Carnaross got a further score in the 18th minute. Carnaross made it a 10 point game with their 3rd goal of the game. Gavin Coyle responded with a fine point off his right with 10 minutes left in the game. Curraha made an additional 5 subs introducing 2 new players and reintroducing 3 players who had started Nick Dillon came on for Kevin O’Connor, Luke McAleese for Séamus Hogan, Andrew Gough for Mark Mahon, Mylo Hussey for Brian Joyce and Jared Roche for Cian Heagney. Gavin Coyle brought Currahas points tally into the double digits with a point from a free with 5 minutes remaining. Carnaross finished the game with a further 1.01.

FT score: Curraha 3.10   Carnaross 4.19

A deserved victory for Carnaross but a very spirited performance from Curraha. The full time scoreboard probably didn't reflect the true reflection of the game. Curraha had a very young side playing and over the course of the year will get a chance to progress and can look forward to their next game on Tuesday the 29th of April against Moynalty at 7.30pm
